In what has become one of the most heated rivalries in Major League Baseball (MLB), the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres were involved in a tense series that culminated in on-field conflicts on Thursday.
These tensions led to multiple suspensions handed down by MLB on Friday.
The Rivalry Heats Up with Hits and Disputes
The game between the Dodgers and Padres was intense, not just because of the competition on the field, but due to the growing frustrations between both teams.

Tensions Escalate in the Ninth Inning
The Dodgers were trailing 5-0 in the ninth inning when pitcher Jack Little hit Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. on the hand with a pitch.
Tatis was in visible pain, and as a result, Padres manager Mike Shildt rushed to the field, both to check on his player and to confront Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
The two managers had a heated exchange, and this quickly escalated into both teams’ benches clearing. The situation was tense, but the teams were eventually separated.
However, the conflict didn’t stop there. In a rare turn of events, Padres pitcher Robert Suarez intentionally hit Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers in the shoulder, further escalating the situation.
But Ohtani took charge and played peacemaker, waving off his teammates who were ready to retaliate. His calm demeanor helped prevent further chaos.
MLB’s Response: Suspensions and Fines
As a result of the heated confrontations, MLB took action by issuing suspensions and fines. Padres manager Mike Shildt and pitcher Robert Suarez, as well as Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, were all penalized.
Shildt and Roberts each received one-game suspensions and fines for their roles in instigating the benches-clearing brawl.
Suarez, who intentionally hit Ohtani, was given a three-game suspension and an undisclosed fine. However, Suarez intends to appeal the suspension.
Reactions from the Managers and Players
Both managers expressed frustration after the incident. Shildt, speaking about the hit on Tatis, made it clear that the Padres had had enough.
He expressed concern over Tatis’ injury, mentioning that he was undergoing X-rays after the game. Shildt said, “Teams that I manage don’t get into altercations like this because teams I manage don’t throw at people. But also – teams I manage don’t take anything.”
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, on the other hand, downplayed the idea that his team had intentionally hit Tatis. He expressed concern for the injury but clarified that the hit was not meant to be retaliatory. “I didn’t feel good about Tatis — great player, good guy — getting hit,” Roberts stated.
Meanwhile, Padres star Manny Machado also weighed in, warning that if Tatis’ injury turned out to be serious, the Dodgers would face consequences. “They need to set a little candle up for Tatis tomorrow, and hope that everything comes back negative,” said Machado.
Outcome of the Game and Updates on Tatis
Despite the drama, the Padres went on to win 5-3, avoiding a series sweep. After the game, it was revealed that Tatis’ X-ray results came back clear, meaning he would be able to play in Friday’s game, though he was still sore.
